Established in 1991 and recognized by the CKC the next year, Akita Alumni blossomed from being a small group of Akita fanciers to becoming a formidable organization of over 250 members worldwide in its first three years of existence.

The growing popularity of the Club is largely due to its faithful support and education of all Akita owners and its pledge to help enthusiasts and the general public become “Akita Aware”. Akita Alumni has a well rounded sphere of activities, from staging CKC shows, presenting seminars, publishing newsworthy Akita interests and health topics, to coordinating Obedience Workshops and social events. Members are encouraged to participate and volunteer, however active involvement is elective.

In its attempt to cover the entire spectrum of Akita activity, Akita Alumni has staged, in a mere five years, many important CKC sanctioned events: Akita Sanction Matches, Booster shows, and Akita Specialties. Fun Matches, Obedience Workshops, Correction Matches, Canine Good Citizen Tests, St. Johns Therapy Dog Tests and Temperament Tests are ongoing. Akita Alumni is frequently represented at sportsmen’s and pet exhibitions with valuable information booths, educating the public and furthering the ideology of responsible ownership.

Expanding on the need for the health and welfare of the breed, the Club orchestrates blood, eye and thyroid clinics within its events. Five vital seminars have been presented, and others are in the making. The Club publishes a Newsletter, provided free of charge to members. The Newsletter offers personal accounts, health information, pictures letters, and political comment. It also serves as a vehicle to interlink the concerns and aspirations of members, giving “Akita Awareness” a local as well as global perspective.

Each year, Akita Alumni publishes Akita Visions Magazine - Seniors Edition, which celebrates the special nature of the older Akita.

Committees of the Club include: Conformation; Obedience; Newsletter; Shelter Monitoring; Membership; Trophies; Gifts and Incentives. Member Breeders also enjoy membership discounts for their new puppy owners, so that each new Akita puppy can get off on the right foot.

The Club operates as a democracy, adhering to its Constitution and strict Code of Ethics. Area representation includes Canada, USA, and overseas, with an extensive newsletter exchange program. Akita Alumni assists in the adoption of displaced Akitas and offers financial aid to recognized rescue groups.

In March of 1995, Akita Alumni became the officially recognized CKC Akita Club for Ontario, encompassing four of the twelve national zones.

Now Akita Alumni is tapping into the vast resources of the Internet to help bring the message to more people, and bring more people to the message.
